The Joint Gist
We need hormones to heal.
They are âGoldilocksâ signals, not too much and not too little.
Excess insulin drives joint pain.
Deficiencies in thyroid, estrogen, and testosterone are important to address for joint pain.
STEP 6: Supplements to Help Joints Heal
Supplements are just that: an addition to an already healthy diet and lifestyle. No number of supplements can make up for a poor diet and inactivity. After all the previous steps are in place, you can then look into supplementation for joint health.
What is your goal with supplementation? As you will see, some supplements are shown to be effective for pain relief, others for actual reversal of the osteoarthritis process. Depending on one's need, the supplements detailed below can assist with day-to-day pain levels or long term regression of degenerative changes.[47]
For Rose, we were looking for both. At 72 years young, Rose has the spirit and energy to be envied by those half her age. I should know. Over the time Iâve known her, Iâve thought of her both as a role model for vibrant aging and as I jokingly remarked at one visit, my âspirit animal.â
Rose is a go-getter. She is politically active, often out changing the world five days a week, sometimes every day of the week. Getting ballot signatures at the farmers market. Running booths for local, state, and national election campaigns. Her small stature might fool you, but she is an all-around dynamo. The only thing that was stopping her was her knee pain.
Over the past several decades, her knee pain crept in slowly and was now interferring more and more in her daily life. She had to rest more often. She could only stand for about 30 minutes before the pain was unbearable. It was intruding upon activism and volunteeringâand for energetic Rose this was simply unacceptable.
She needed to get back in action, and after reviewing all the prior five steps, we started with a supplementation trial.
Collagen
As Iâve outlined in Step 2, collagen is a unique and vital building block of the musculoskeletal system. On a molecular level cartilage, ligaments, and tendons are comprised of mostly collagen fibers (50-98% depending on the exact tissue).
We see that providing this essential building block of healthy joint tissue improves joint pain. [48] Collagen supplementation is shown to increase collagen synthesis in cartilag e tissue.[49] That is a good thing for those with osteoarthritis, since cartilage is primarily made of collagen fibers.
When choosing a collagen supplement, there are a few important factors to consider.
Since collagen is manufactured from animal products, the source counts. I donât want to be consuming supplements that comes from factory feedlots. You can easily find a grass-fed or pastured collagen source (from cattle or pork).
Also, be aware of different forms of collagen. Collagen hydrosylate is common form, and doesn't need to be cooked, unlike gelatin. Collagen powder can be easily mixed into water, coffee or another beverage.
If the package says gelatin, then it requires cooking. Jell-O is the most well-known example, but you can find plain gelatin in the store as well.
